Alison Russell

Fields: Early America, Public HistoryPhoto of Alison Russell, who has pale skin and straight brown hair and is wearing a plaid top.

Education: B.A. in History and a B.S. in Education from Boston University (2010), M.A. in History with a Public History focus from American University (2018).

Interests: Intellectual and social history of legal and governmental documents, specifically how the use of a governing document by non-government officials shaped understandings of identity and nationalism. I’ve written in the past on the comparative size of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence and the construction of Whiteness from the centennial celebration of the Constitution’s use of Native American imagery.  

Experience: Taught 7th through 12th-grade history and government for the past ten years. In connection with teaching, I have written curriculum, run teacher trainings and presented at conferences on using primary sources to critically examine historical narratives. Worked with fellowships and grants through Teaching American History, Gilder Lehrman and the James Madison Fellowship Foundation. Interned with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage on the Folklife Festival and educational outreach.
