BACKGROUND

Sophia Ortega received her bachelor's degree from Hampshire College. With a focus on decolonization, her studies look at how public spheres of education in the U.S. do and do not communicate histories of colonialism, race, and gender, and the various ways those stories can be made visible in public education, utilizing decolonial frameworks and methodologies. She worked in the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art's Art Studio from 2022-2026, adapting museum materials to share with the public, and hopes to expand on her senior thesis, a 200+ page project on decolonization, storytelling, and oral history, in her current program.
