The History Department offers a number of continuing education opportunities.

Our online classes are open to the general public, as well as enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. These classes are not “MOOCs”—the Massive Open Online Courses that may come to mind when you think of online education. Instead, they are small, discussion-rich and highly participatory classes with the same rigorous academic standards and outstanding university faculty as our regular on-campus programs.

K-12 teachers can earn professional development points (PDPs) by participating in The History Institute, an annual series of teacher education workshops organized by the History Department. K-12 teachers can earn graduate credit toward the professional licensure by enrolling in our graduate-level classes. The Department of History has been a proud partner in several NEH summer institutes for teachers, including Teaching Native American Histories, Forge of Innovation and Women Making Change.

The Public History Program regularly hosts events for local history practitioners, from lectures by nationally prominent figures in the field to day-long workshops in oral history. We are proud to serve as co-sponsors of several conferences for public history professionals, including the Mass History Conference, the New England Museum Association Annual Conference, and the National Council on Public History's Annual Meeting.

The History Department also works closely with our colleagues in Architecture+Design, who offer a master's degree for aspiring historic preservation professionals. The Master of Science in Design and Historic Preservation provides a unique opportunity for advanced study in historic preservation theory, practice, and public policy. The program uses Hancock Shaker Village, one of the largest and best preserved Shaker sites in the nation, as a primary study site. Classes meet Friday and Saturday every other week during the semester and can lead to a Masters Degree in two years. Individual classes are open to all and may qualify for AIA continuing education credits. Click for more information about upcoming classes.
