Recently, both the Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards nominees were announced. They included among them four UMass Amherst Theater alumni and one faculty member, who pulled in a total of nine nominations, showing the department's prowess—especially in their rigorous concentrations in design, theater technology, and stagecraft.
Up for Tony Awards are David Korins '99 (Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Hamilton), Justin Townsend '97 (Best Lighting Design of a Musical for American Psycho; Best Lighting Design of a Play for The Humans), and Ben Stanton '99 (Best Lighting Design for a Play for Spring Awakening). The full list of Tony Award nominees can be seen here.
This comes on top of last week's Drama Desk Awards nominations. Again, Justin Townsend '97 gets two nods in lighting design (Outstanding Lighting Design for a Musical for American Psycho; Outstanding Lighting Design for a Play for The Humans), and Ben Stanton '99 has one (Outstanding Lighting Design for a Play for Spring Awakening). Jane Cox, who studied lighting design with Theater Department Chair Penny Remsen as an exchange student, and so discovered a career, is also recognized in the lighting category (Outstanding Lighting Design for a Musical for The Color Purple). Faculty member Jessica Ford received a nomination for Outstanding Costume Design for a Play for These Paper Bullets! The full list of Drama Desk Awards nominations can be seen here.
Congratulations to the nominees. We're rooting for you!
