Professor and chair of the Department of Architecture, Stephen Schreiber, FAIA, has been named one of 2019’s Distinguished Professor Award laureates by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). The ACSA represents more than 40,000 architecture faculty and students worldwide and bestows the honor annually to an elite group of educators for their notable work in building design, community collaborations, scholarship and service.

Professor Schreiber has served as dean/director at the school of architecture at the University of South Florida, and director of the architecture program at the University of New Mexico. His research and professional work have been published in numerous journals. Schreiber was the 2005-06 President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). He was chair of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects, and is on the board of directors of the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards. He is also an elected councilor on the new Amherst Town Council

Schreiber joined UMass in 2005 to lead the Architecture Program, and became founding chair of the Department of Architecture when it was established as a full department in 2014. He was instrumental in the planning and design process for the award-winning John W. Olver Design Building, which houses the architecture department as well as the building and design technology program and the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. “The remarkable, award winning, and well-published Design Building is testimony to Steve's considerable leadership and engagement with university administration, deans, and design professionals,” said Roger Schluntz, professor at the University of New Mexico and Schreiber’s ACSA sponsor.

“I am honored and humbled by this award, which acknowledges the many successes of the UMass Department of Architecture,” said Schreiber.

Professor Schreiber shares the 2019 Distinguished Professor laureate with Thomas Barrie, North Carolina State University; Thomas Fischer, University of Minnesota; Patricia Oliver, University of Houston; and Andres Mignucci, University of Puerto Rico. He will accept his award Friday, March 29 at the ACSA annual meeting in Pittsburgh.
