Higginson Discusses ‘Harlem/South Africa Connection’ in Panel at Apollo Theater

History professor John Higginson, appeared in the Apollo Theater’s Uptown Hall series “The Harlem/South Africa Connection” on Oct. 12 in New York City.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of President Nelson Mandela’s election in South Africa, the forum focused on Harlem’s historical connections with South Africa. Other panelists included Harry Belafonte, former mayor David Dinkins and Congressman Charlie Rangel.
The Uptown Hall series addresses cultural, social and political issues facing the Harlem Community. The Apollo Uptown Hall is part of “Africa Now! South Africa,” and presented in partnership with the World Music Institute and in association with Carnegie Hall’s citywide Ubuntu: Music & Arts of South Africa festival.
