Zekos Honored with 2022 Distinguished Community Engagement Award

Erika Zekos, senior lecturer and undergraduate program director in the Department of Architecture, was one of two faculty members recognized by the Provost’s Office as a 2022 Distinguished Community Engagement Award recipient. The award comes with a $1,000 monetary prize.

UMass Vocal Jazz Group Wins Outstanding Performance Award from DownBeat Magazine

The UMass Vocal Jazz Group, directed by Catherine Jensen-Hole, was among the winners in the annual Student Music Awards sponsored by DownBeat Magazine, widely recognized as the top publication devoted to “Jazz, Blues, and Beyond.” Each year, DownBeat announces the Student Music Award winners in their June issue based on recordings submitted by jazz programs from across the country. Ensembles and individual students from the UMass Jazz and African American Music Studies program have been awarded SMA’s in virtually every category over the past thirty-five years.

A Message from Dean Barbara Krauthamer

Like many of you, I was saddened and angered to learn that a number of Black students and Black student groups had been the target of yet another racist email. Unfortunately, this is not the only racist incident that has occurred recently on our campus and in our college. I’ve been made aware of other acts of racism and hate in our departments over the course of this semester. Racist harassment takes a considerable toll on our Black students and colleagues. Students should be able to spend the final days of the semester finishing their coursework and looking ahead to the summer. Our Black students, however, have to contend yet again with acts of racism and hate.
