Sidney Poitier, recognized widely as Hollywood's first Black movie star, died on Thursday, January 6, 2022. He was revered for his artistic talent and on-screen performances, and also for his impact as a champion of civil rights. Recently, CNN looked back on Poitier's legacy and interviewed UMass Amherst's TreaAndrea Russworm, associate professor of English and associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
