Justin Townsend '97 Wins Tony Award for Lighting Design in 'Moulin Rouge'

The Broadway production of Moulin Rouge won an impressive ten Tony Awards at Sunday’s ceremony, but for the UMass Amherst theater department, one win was particularly exciting. Lighting designer Justin Townsend ’97 became the first UMass theater design alum ever to win a Tony.

Marla Miller Awarded Distinction by Board of Trustees

Marla Miller, professor of history and director of the Public History Program, was among three UMass Amherst faculty members named Distinguished Professors following approval by the Board of Trustees during the summer of 2021. The title Distinguished Professor is conferred on select, highly accomplished faculty who have already achieved the rank of professor and who meet a demanding set of qualifications.

Winter Holiday Card Art Contest

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts will feature work by a student artist on its 2021 Winter Holiday Card, focused on the theme “Together Again.” Students are encouraged to reflect on community, humanity, diversity and inclusiveness, celebration, and hope, but all appropriate interpretations of the theme are welcome. The college’s celebration of the winter holidays and the new year is non-denominational and inclusive, and these principles will be kept in mind when the committee makes its selection.
