UMass Music & Dance Announce Concerts by Jazz Lab, Brass Ensembles

Brass Ensembles

Later this month, the University of Massachusetts Department of Music and Dance will present two performances by their acclaimed student ensembles. Both concerts will take place at 7:30PM in Bezanson Recital Hall, located in the UMass Fine Arts Center, and are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, October 26, the UMass Jazz Lab ensemble, directed by graduate conductors  Dann Friedman and Zach Bartolomei, will present a performance of pop/jazz standards and contemporary works. The first half will feature the Graduate Jazz Composers Ensemble performing new works by Friedman, Brian Martin, Jay Elfenbein, and Jacqueline Chasen, along with new arrangements of Bartok’s “14 Bagatelles for Solo Piano” by Bartolomei and Steely Dan’s “Deacon Blues” by Owen Ross. The concert’s second half will feature arrangements of classic tunes like James Moody’s “The Story,” Don Cherry’s “Mopti,” and David Paich’s “Rosanna,” made popular by the band Toto.

On Monday, October 30, ensembles from the department’s brass program will present a concert of chamber works titled “Brass of UMass.” The program will feature a varied program performed by combined student ensembles from the horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba/euphonium studios.

Free and secure parking is available in nearby University lot 71 off Massachusetts Avenue and lot 62 via Thatcher Way or Stockbridge Road.  Visit the Fine Arts Center website for more information or refer to the UMass interactive parking map.
