James Baldwin on Film, on the Page, and in the Classroom
Announcing a two-part workshop on the life and work of James Baldwin organized by the Western Mass Writing Project, the UMass History Department's K12 History Institute and the James Baldwin Project. Don't miss this opportunity to get acquainted -- or reacquainted -- with a great American writer, social critic and historical figure whose work addresses some the most important issues of our era. Sessions will take place November 2 and 30 from 5-8 p.m. at the Holyoke Public Library (250 Chestnut Street, Holyoke).
The first session (11/2) will feature a screening and discussion of the biographical film The Price of the Ticket, which includes numerous interviews with Baldwin. The second meeting (11/30) will include discussion of a short piece of Baldwin’s writing and strategies for teaching it. The emphasis will be on teaching Baldwin in K12 classrooms, but the program is open to all educators and anyone interested in learning more about James Baldwin. If there is interest, this program may develop into an extended series or even a course.
A light supper will be served. FREE. Register here.
