The College of Humanities and Fine Arts represents a wide range of voices and perspectives. Faculty and students are leaders in the effort to make our world a better place. We have a long history of presenting talks and organizing exhibits and performances that are presented to and enrich the whole campus and contribute to the conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Diversity and Racial Justice Courses
The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is committed to teaching and scholarship that recognize crucial and often neglected contributions, experiences, and struggles of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and the legacies of systemic racism and its intersections with other forms of inequality and injustice.
These spring 2023 courses and programs aim to integrate diverse content, critical thinking skills, and classroom spaces that foster deep and transformative engagement.
Celebrating Black Voices
As part of the Black Presence Initiative, Dr. John Bracey—professor in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies—and his students have conducted oral history interviews with past and present members of UMass Amherst's Black community. The result is an ever-growing website featuring voices, stories, and experiences of members of the Black community at UMass.
Introducing HFA's New Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Cara Takakjian—senior lecturer, undergraduate program director, and chief undergraduate advisor for Italian Studies—has been named HFA’s new associate dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Takakjian will lead the college’s equity initiatives to support underrepresented undergraduate students.
