The Classics Department of UMass Amherst provides undergraduate and graduate students at the state’s flagship institution with comprehensive access to the rich and diverse civilizations of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean, including Greece and Rome.

Quality research in all the core subdisciplines of Classics and in some unique specializations sustains the national and international reputation of our faculty and enhances our curriculum at every level.

Our award-winning instructors teach a wide variety of courses in ancient languages, literature, culture, and archaeology. The department’s nationally regarded graduate program offers the Master of Arts in Teaching Latin and Classical Humanities and produces graduates who enthusiastically go out to teach Latin in secondary schools all over the country and introduce the ancient western world to new generations of students.
