History of Art and Architecture
The Department of History of Art and Architecture provides students with the chance to develop their critical thinking and verbal analysis skills by engaging with some of history’s most impressive aesthetic achievements. The program offers a flexible, rigorous liberal arts degree that stimulates intellectual curiosity while preparing students for a variety of careers.
The department is the only program of its kind at a public institution in New England to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field. An emphasis on the cultures of Western Europe, North America, Islam, and East Asia gives students the opportunity to focus on the subjects and issues that they’re most passionate about.
“On the undergraduate level we are able to sponsor majors in internships in the many and varied area art museums, while the new Practicum course gives our students a taste of the various museum careers. On the graduate level, we offer the Graduate Seminar in Museum Studies, which I have taught for over three decades.” -Professor Walter Denny
