HFA Summer Internship Scholarship

HFA Summer Internship Scholarships are still being awarded for the summer of 2020. These scholarships help students participate in valuable summer internship experiences that have great potential but offer no compensation. We are grateful for the generosity of HFA alumni who know how important these experiences are and who have chosen to help make them possible.

This is a competitive program. Those who succeed will be pursuing a high-quality internship that is likely to further their academic and professional goals or their career exploration.

Applicants MUST:

  • Have their PRIMARY major in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
  • Have a high level of financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid Services Office.
  • Hold a cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 2.75.
  • Be registered as a full-time undergraduate student in the semester that follows the internship.
  • Have applied for or been accepted into an internship that lasts 6 weeks or more and offers a minimum of 120 hours of experience.
  • Participate in an internship that does not require any form of payment (e.g., a fee, tuition, donation, etc.).
  • Preference will be given to those not previously supported by this fund.

Only applications from students who meet ALL of the criteria listed above will be considered.

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be pursuing an internship that:

  • Requires on-site participation and involvement.
  • Is related to their career goals, aspirations, or interests.
  • Will not be performed for or supervised by a relative.

APPLICATION PERIOD AND DEADLINES

Applications will be reviewed as they are received in the spring semester and awarded until funds are fully depleted.

You do not need to have an internship offer before you request funding, but you must have applied.  If you have multiple applications pending, we encourage you to identify the two best opportunities and submit an application for each of them, indicating which opportunity is your preferred site.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Your proposed internship needs to be relevant to your educational goals or career interests. The majority of your time at the internship site should be spent on activities that enhance learning and give you substantive experience.  It is important for the position to be designed so you receive ongoing feedback and guidance from your internship supervisor.

Applications will be evaluated based on a clear and compelling statement describing the relationship between your professional goals or your career exploration and the internship experience. The inclusion of relevant details, the overall quality of your writing, and understandable explanations will enhance your application. Your initiative and commitment to the position should be evident.

You will be asked to describe the process you followed to find the position.

AWARD AMOUNTS

Award amounts will generally be more than $1,000, and take into account the student’s circumstances and the nature of the internship.

REQUIREMENTS OF AWARD RECIPIENTS

  • Attendance at a one-hour, pre-internship seminar (time TBD)
  • Submission of a thank you letter to the donors, whose generosity provides this funding. This letter will include a reflection on your internship experience.

Please note: As an Educational Award, HFA Internship Scholarships are considered taxable income. We encourage you to be in touch with the university’s financial aid office to see how an award might affect any financial aid you receive and to contact a finance or tax professional if you have questions about an award’s impact.
