Students
In the UMass Amherst College of Humanities and Fine Arts, we celebrate the power of ideas. Not only do we study the ideas of great thinkers, writers, and artists, but we equip our students with the abilities to form new ones in order to ignite progress.
With the lowest student to teacher ratio on the UMass Amherst campus, a diverse selection of courses, and a dedicated staff of academic and career advisors, Humanities and Fine Arts offers students the rigor and individual attention of a liberal arts college within the vibrant curricular range of a major research university.
Today’s graduates are innovative, dynamic problem-solvers prepared to be citizens in a rapidly evolving global environment.
SCHOLARSHIPS
A number of scholarships are available to currently enrolled undergraduate students who have declared a major in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Generally, the awards fall into two categories: those specifically designated to help student seeking opportunities beyind the campus and those seeking financial support for their academic pursuits on campus.

Faculty
Professor Lisa Green
After earning her PhD at UMass Amherst, Professor Green returned to campus and founded the Center for the Study of African American Language to bolster research on language usage in the African American community.
Humanities and Fine Arts faculty perform at the highest levels in teaching, research and service—the three pillars of the great land-grant institutions. They engage in multidimensional, collaborative research, scholarship and creative activity that drive discovery and innovation locally, nationally and worldwide.
Research & Creative Activity
Ocean Vuong, associate professor of creative writing in the Department of English, was named a MacArthur Fellow in the Fiction and Non-Fiction Writing category.
Also known as a "genius grant," the fellowship recognizes three criteria for selection: exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishments, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.
