Senior Celebration & Commencement
The University of Massachusetts Amherst looks forward to celebrating the graduates of the Class of 2022 and welcoming their friends and families to campus. As cases of COVID-19 are increasing in Massachusetts and nationally, we know that our commencement events draw thousands from all over. To protect yourself and others, we strongly encourage all graduates and guests to wear a face covering when attending any indoor commencement events, regardless of vaccination status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who gets to walk?
A student’s year of graduation is established by the Registrar’s Office. To be eligible to participate in the May 2022 Commencement ceremony, students must have fulfilled all requirements by the time of the ceremony or be scheduled to do so by September 2022. Students scheduled for February 2023 graduation who wish to attend the May 2022 ceremony must file a “Petition to Participate in an Earlier Commencement” form, available at the Registrar’s Office in 213 Whitmore.
Do my guests need tickets?
No, but RSVP so we can offer you the best experience possible.
I have more than one major. Can I walk more than once and/or receive multiple medals?
Students can walk once in the HFA Senior Celebration. By default, graduates will be placed with their primary major as recorded in the Registrar's Office. If you would like to walk with a department other than your primary major, please let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and indicating that department when you RSVP.
Graduates may receive one commemorative medal for each degree earned—e.g. a student earning both a BS and a BA may receive two medals—but not those with multiple majors. If you will be receiving more than one degree in HFA, please let us know by emailing email@example.com.
What should I wear?
Please wear your cap and gown during the ceremony. The Recreation Center has air-conditioning, but keep in mind that the room will warm up with the large audience and more so if it is unseasonably warm outside or if the sun is shining. The building's temperature will be adjusted as needed, but you are best served by planning to add or subtract layers.
Tassel colors are based on your primary major.
White - Humanities & Fine Arts
Brown - Bachelor of Fine Arts
Pink - Bachelor of Music
When should I arrive?
Graduates should arrive at the Recreation Center at 12:00 p.m. Graduates will begin to line up at 12:20 p.m.
Graduating students and faculty will assemble in rooms throughout the building by department. Parents and guests should go directly to the gymnasium. Signs with that information will be posted throughout the building.
Are there any COVID-19 restrictions or protocols?
Please check the Campus Guidance for Campus Events for up-to-date recommendations.
