October 10 - 25, 2023

Curated by Professor Jenny Vogel

Opening Reception
Wednesday, October 11, 4 - 6 PM

HERTER ART GALLERY is pleased to present Transcendent Narratives: Stories of Humanity, an exhibition of work by seniors in the Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Transcendent Narratives: Stories of Humanity is an exploration of the stories we tell one another through every means possible. Wielding a range of mediums—including animation, painting, and prints—the artists present narratives both suspended in time and unfolding before viewers’ eyes. Whether comedic or intense, personal or fantastical, the exhibition shepherds us on a journey to experience other worlds, times, and lives.

The artists exhibiting work are part of Art 401, a course focusing on professional art career practices. The course prepares art students for life after graduation by teaching exhibition organization, grant application, and publicization of their work. Transcendent Narratives: Stories of Humanity is an opportunity for the students in the class to put these skills into practice.

We welcome you to give ample, equal observation to each work on display in this exhibit. The works are presented in various formats including wall hangings, televisions, projectors, and sculptures. Through this range of techniques, they all share a common thread of hunger to tell and broadcast a story to the world.

Artists included in the exhibition: Phil Batubara, Shane Fontaine, Austin Fydenkevez, Lafayette Herard, Ian Hunt, Shea Kenny, TJ LaLonde, Jasper Merrill, Morgan Miller, Tyler Millien, Morgan O’Blenis, Isabelle Okwuosa, Isabella Paterson, Cole Senatore, Heeju Yoo, Anyi Zhao.

This event was made possible with generous support from the UMass Fine Arts Council.
