A/E: Body in Flux

Opening Reception: February 20th, 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.

A/E: Body In Flux is an exhibition which explores the tension between Affected and Effected states of being as experienced by the human body over a lifetime. An Effected object is something that is produced by an agency or cause as a result or consequence ie: X built the table. An Affected object is an object which already exists and is changed by an experience or impact ie, X ruined the table. Note that in one case the object, “the table”, is understood as existing before X's activities, while in the other case the table’s whole existence resulted from X's activities. We occupy Effected and Affected states constantly. Our lives are the push/pull of creating ourselves, experiencing ourselves being acted upon and transformed by outside forces, and then choosing to create ourselves anew again.

In this show, 7 visual artists draw deeply from rooted personal experiences to address the complexities of the body in these states of transition, touching upon themes of disease, death, gender, identity, discrimination, inclusion, union and vulnerability. The work presented here is an expression of the body, sometimes the artists own, as the author and location of these ongoing transformations.

The artists in this show are Kate Brehm, Benjamin Heller, Kathryn Fanelli, Vick Quezada, Tony Reamer, Jessica Scott and Chaehee Yoon. Their work encompasses a compelling diversity of approaches and mediums ranging from photography, video, kinetic sculpture, costume, painting to installation.

About the Curators

Chaehee Yoon was born in South Korea. She received a BFA from University of Minnesota and is currently studying Studio Arts to receive her MFA at University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her work focuses on the experience of memory and cultural identity through an enormous amount of social issues. She explores awareness of oppression and examines cultural identity, social equity, and critical aspects of race.

Jessica Scott is visual artist, director and performer from San Francisco by way of New York City. Her previous design work includes puppets, dolls, masks, installation and sculpture. Jessica received her B.A. in Political Science from NYU and is now a first year candidate in the MFA Fine Arts program at University of Massachusetts Amherst where she intends to focus on 3D work that provokes a tactile intimacy with the viewer.
