UMass Amherst’s M.A. and Ph.D. programs in German Studies have an international reputation. Research strengths include: Black German Studies; Cultural and Intellectual History; Film Studies; GDR Studies; Gender and Sexuality Studies; German-Jewish Studies; Holocaust Studies; Turkish-German Studies. UMass offers unique resources, such as the DEFA Film Library, a research center focusing on film related to East Germany, and the Yiddish Book Center. UMass offers graduate exchange programs with universities in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Austria. Language instruction available at UMass includes German, Swedish, Yiddish, Middle High German, and Old Norse. The faculty and program resources of the Five College Consortium are an additional benefit to German Studies at UMass.
