The Department of English offers scholarly M.A. and Ph.D. graduate programs with curriculum ranging from broader English studies to more focused areas in American Studies, Composition and Rhetoric, and Early Modern and Renaissance Studies. In addition, the three-year M.F.A. for Poets and Writers is among the oldest and most respected programs of its kind in the country, dedicated to writing workshops and the completion of a book-length manuscript in prose or poetry.

For the 2020-2021 graduate admissions cycle, the UMass English Department is only reviewing applications in select fields. We welcome applications from those working in Composition and Rhetoric as well as those whose interests in American Literature / American Studies focus on African American, Arab American, or Native American Literature. Please note that this focus applies only to the MA/PhD and PhD class entering in fall 2021. We are still accepting applications in all areas for our terminal MA program.

The Graduate School will be unable to reimburse fees for those who submit applications in areas that are not under review this year.
