Graduate Commencement 2022

The Graduate School congratulates you on completing an advanced degree from UMass Amherst! We look forward to celebrating your academic accomplishments with you during Graduate Commencement, which will begin at 9:00 AM on Friday, May 13th, at McGuirk Stadium. Read below for additional details about the ceremony.

Required Check-In

Doctoral degree recipients must check-in at the registration tables in parking Lot 11 after 7:30 AM. After checking in, doctoral degree recipients will move into the line-up area.

Master’s and Education Specialist degree recipients will be able to check-in with a QR code. The QR code will be at registration tables, as well as throughout the master’s line-up area.

All graduates should be wearing their regalia—except for doctoral hoods—at check in. Doctoral candidates should keep their hoods with them until they enter the hooding area. Please refrain from bringing backpacks, purses, or other bags to Commencement. These items will be inspected by security personnel and cannot be brought onto the Commencement floor.

Security Measures for Graduates and Guests

McGuirk Stadium has implemented security measures--including the use of metal detectors --that may cause congestion near facility entrances. To ensure a positive experience, please note the following:

  • Graduates should arrive at the McGuirk Stadium check-in area (see "required check-in" information below) starting at 7:30 AM. Please refrain from carrying backpacks, purses, or other bags. All of these items will be inspected by security personnel prior to entry into the facility and cannot be allowed onto the floor (in most cases). Please note that security inspections may delay or otherwise impede participation in Commencement.
  • Gates will open for guests at 7:45 AM and guests should arrive at McGuirk Stadium no later than 8:30 AM. Guests will not be able to enter the stadium during the processional. Delays in entering the building will occur. Backpacks, purses, and other bags will be inspected by security personnel. Phones must be passed through metal detectors in bins.

Presentation of Degree Recipients

  • Doctoral degree recipients: At the appropriate time, marshals will guide advisees and advisors to the hooding area. Once graduates enter the hooding area, their names will be announced and their advisors or another university representative will complete the hooding. After receiving congratulations from a university official, graduates will exit the hooding area and return to their seats with their advisors. Advisors who have multiple doctoral students participating in Commencement will remain in the hooding area until all of their advisees have been hooded.

  • Master’s and Education Specialist candidates will be celebrated as a group by school or college. The Dean will ask candidates from each school or college to stand and be recognized.
