Online with OPD!

Winter Dissertation Writing Group (January 11-22)

The Winter Dissertation Writing Group will run Monday, January 11th through Friday, January 22nd (with no weekend obligations). Over the course of these two weeks, OPD will offer both synchronous and asynchronous opportunities to participate in a focused community of writers in order to build support and accountability. Synchronous opportunities include online workshops covering best practices, Zoom check-ins, and work sessions. Asynchronous opportunities include forum-based check-ins, discussion boards, and resources on best practices.

A research-proven foundation of The Dissertation Writing Group is that a strong community creates accountability and can bring structure and energy to the writing practice of individuals. We are excited that this online-setting for the Group will allow us to build an interdisciplinary community of writers in different places and time zones, and with different work-life rhythms. We hope that participants will experiment with synchronous and asynchronous participation to create habits and communities they can take with them into the semester.

Space in the Dissertation Writing Group will be limited to make sure that dissertators can connect with each other and that we can support the entire group. Because of this, we ask that you fill out this application in its entirety. We expect acceptance into this program will be competitive, and participants will be selected based on the strength of their completed application. MFAs, those at the prospectus/proposal stage, and those who have participated in the Dissertation Writing Retreats in the past will be considered if space is available.

Priority will be given to dissertators who have a combination of the following:

  1. a desire to participate in an active writing community (synchronously, asynchronously, or a combination of both);
  2. an interest in experimenting with and discussing best writing practices and habits; and
  3. a plan to draft, revise, or edit dissertation chapters during those two weeks.

Completed applications must be received by the end of the day on Monday, December 7, 2020.
