Grants and Fellowships
The early careers of graduate students and postdocs are greatly enhanced by the financial support and prestige associated with external grants and fellowships. The Office of Professional Development (OPD) works directly with graduate students and postdocs to strategically search for relevant funding sources and develop applications that convey strong ideas in a polished, organized presentation. In the 2015-16 academic year, OPD worked directly with students to secure over $1.1 million in external grants and fellowships.
OPD activities related to external funding include information sessions, writing and peer review workshops, and individual consultations. We provide tips and tools to help applicants search for funding, frame an application for a particular funder, and develop competitive applications for funding opportunities.
Our philosophy is to position UMass Amherst graduate students and postdocs for success in their search for external funding while promoting the professional development opportunities inherent in the application process. Preparing funding proposals provides the opportunity to learn how to write for different audiences, a critical skill for academics as well as those working in professional positions outside of academia.
Our blog provides numerous resources to help you search and apply for funding—check out the “Searchable Databases” page to get started. To schedule a 1-on-1 consultation or for more information contact Heidi Bauer-Clapp at
