Vegetation in salt marshes reflect system hydrology and substrate in salt marshes and is an important indicator of marsh function (habitat, biodiversity, coastal protection). By following changes in the plant community, we can assess the overall condition of the marsh and whether restoration actions are supporting plant development indicative of healthy marshes. The species, density and vigor of vegetation in salt marshes are broadly used to characterize marsh health; predicting whether marsh areas will be sustainable and resilient or vulnerable and at-risk from such threats as sea levels rise.

To assist in monitoring this valuable indicator of salt marsh vulnerability, MassMarsh developed a standard set of procedures for state wide monitoring of salt marsh vegetation. This SOP uses permanent plots along transects to characterize the plant community for assessment of the marsh conditions or pre and post restoration actions. The data produced can be statistically reduced to yield an overall picture of wetland vegetation and changes over time for interpretation regarding marsh health or vulnerability as part of a comprehensive wetlands assessment for the state.
