The UMass Amherst Institute for Global Health (IGH) and the Department of Health Promotion and Policy are pleased to announce the second talk in the IGH 2021-2022 Global Health Seminar Series by Dr. Shinji Nakahara. Dr. Nakahara will deliver a talk titled "Strengthening Health Service System By Integrating Emergency Care into Primary Healthcare" on Tuesday, October 19, beginning at 8:30 am via Zoom.

Dr. Nakahara is a professor at  Kanagawa University of Human Services' School of Health Innovation in Kanagawa, Japan. After 6 years of clinical practices in emergency medicine and surgery, he started academic activities in public health. Dr. Nakahara’s research focuses on policy evaluation in traffic injury prevention; evaluation of health system focusing on community health, emergency care, and pre-hospital care.

Primary healthcare (PHC) principles provide a framework for strengthening the healthcare system to tackle increasing and diversifying health needs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In this presentation, Dr. Nakahara will discuss the possibility of applying PHC principles to emergency care in LMICs and integrating emergency care into PHC. He will highlight how integrating emergency care into PHC could enhance the general health system and is more efficient than having separate systems.
