Undergraduate Students
UMass Amherst offers a wide range of educational opportunities for undergraduates with over 100 major subject areas for undergraduate exchange students. Discover the diverse academic options available to you.
Undergraduate exchange students are required to enroll in 12-15 credits and can enroll in classes from any open department, provided they meet the entry requirements for those courses.
UMass Amherst cannot guarantee the availability of specific courses or guarantee enrollment in requested courses for exchange students.
Students should be aware of the following restrictions and enrollment requirements:
- Exchange students are not eligible to enroll in the following types of courses:
- U+, Univ+, or UWW (University Without Walls) classes, as these are fee-based classes that are not covered by the tuition waiver.
- Courses that fulfill the “UMass Junior Year Writing Requirement.”
- Courses that fulfill the “Integrative Experience Requirement.”
- Most online courses.
- Undergraduate students are not eligible to take courses in the following departments:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Computer Science
- Dance
- Nursing
- Studio Art
- Music* (registration for classes in this department is contingent upon completing on-campus auditions)
- Undergraduate students are only permitted to enroll in classes within the following specific schools if they have officially declared a major within that school at their home university.
- Isenberg School of Management (Accounting, Finance, Hospitality & Tourism Management, Management, Marketing, Operations & Information Management, and Sport Management majors)
- School of Engineering (Chemical, Civil & Environmental, Electrical & Computer, and Mechanical & Industrial, Engineering)
Isenberg School of Management (ISOM) is home to Accounting, Finance, Hospitality & Tourism Management, Management, Marketing, Operations & Information Management, and Sport Management majors.
Restrictions and Notes:
- Classes are limited to those who have declared such as their major or minor at their home institution.
- Students are limited to three (3) Isenberg courses per semester.
- The following courses are not accessible to exchange students:
- Junior Year Writing (including SCH-MGMT 310, 311, 312, 314, 315, 317, 390A and 390S)
- Capstone courses (such as HT-MGT 433, 444, and 455, MANAGEMENT 488, SCH-MGMT 494BI and 499C/499D, SPORTMGT 494PI)
- SCH-MGMT 200 - Career and Professional Development and SCH-MGMT 201 - Introduction to Diversity and Inclusion in Business
- Business Analytics Certificate: OIM 240, Business Data Analysis; OIM 350, Business Intelligence and Analytics; OIM 303, Business Applications of Python; and OIM 307 Power Spreadsheets for Business Analysts
- Real Estate Courses
- The following courses are more accessible during the spring semester than fall: Accounting 221, Accounting 222, Finance 301, Management 301, Marketing 301, and OIM 301.

There are limited seats in ISOM classes. Exchange students will be given priority enrollment after UMass Juniors select courses. Enrollment in Isenberg courses cannot be guaranteed.
Graduate Students
Graduate exchange students can select from over 120 graduate programs across 29 academic disciplines. With an emphasis on cutting-edge research, UMass Amherst is ranked among the top 200 academic institutions worldwide according to QS World University Rankings.
Graduate exchange students must enroll in 9 credits per semester and take at least two 500 level or above courses per semester and no more than one undergraduate course per semester. Only one class can be an online university class per semester.
The capacity for exchange graduate students within UMass Amherst departments is limited, and the restrictions can vary from year to year. Some departments review and decide on applications as they are submitted, while others consider additional criteria when selecting candidates and may take longer to issue decisions.
Graduate exchange students are not eligible to take courses within Clinical Psychology.
The Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst offers few courses for exchange students. It is important to note that exchange students are not eligible to enroll in courses within the core MBA program, UWW, or U+.
While specific course availability may vary each term, below are some examples of courses that have previously been open to exchange students. Check the UMass Amherst course catalogue about two weeks before the enrollment period to confirm which courses are open.
