TN immigration status (also known as the North American Free Trade Agreement-NAFTA, or the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement-USMCA) is available to citizens of Canada and Mexico who intend to come to the U.S. to engage in professional business activities on a temporary basis. TN occupations are limited to the list of professions found here.
Canadian citizens seeking entry to the U.S. in TN status may simply apply at a U.S. border crossing or other U.S. port of entry such as an airport with the appropriate documents. Mexican citizens are required to obtain advance approval and acquire a TN visa from a U.S. consulate prior to entering the U.S. Canadian and Mexican citizens can be admitted to the U.S. in TN status for up to 3-year increments. Extension of TN status may also be granted in additional 3-year increments provided the employment and stay in the U.S. remains temporary in nature.
Legally married spouses and dependent children under 21 may accompany the TN principal in TD immigration status. TD status does not permit work authorization in the U.S.
Campus departments who have questions about the use of TN immigration status should contact the ISSS at least two months in advance. After review of initial inquiry, ISSS will initiate the TN process in house or refer to outside immigration counsel.
