On April 24, 2023, Professor Jeffrey Herf (Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History, University of Maryland College Park) and Rabbi Dr. Ulrike Offenberg (Hameln, Germany) joined us on Zoom for a conversation titled “Jews in Germany Since 1989 / Jews and Germany Since 1989.” The discussion was moderated by Professor Jonathan Skolnik (UMass Amherst German Studies) and Ester Gonzalez Martin (PhD student, UMass Amherst). This cross-continental conversation about Jewish life in Germany and the relationship between the global Jewish community and Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The conversation also touches upon Jewish Life in East Germany and West Germany before reunification.
The discussion was part of a series of events at UMass Amherst to celebrate the campus installation of a segment of the Berlin Wall that was gifted to the university. The wall segment contains the art piece “The Power of Creativity Over Concrete” by the famed French graffiti artist Thierry Noir.
This event was sponsored by the Program in German and Scandinavian Studies and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
