In 2024, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) tasked MGS and colleagues at UMass Amherst with developing a statewide plan for monitoring and restoring salt marshes. This forward-thinking initiative from MassDEP was motivated by the urgency to act quickly in light of the existential threat posed by accelerating sea level rise to salt marsh existence and added stressors to salt marshes resulting from centuries of mismanagement. This effort provides coordination and consistency across restoration efforts, and provides baseline observations to help inform in which areas restoration efforts are most needed.
