MassMarsh

MassDEP Logo
MassMarsh is a statewide initiative spearheaded by MassDEP to collaboratively and proactively manage our salt marshes for resilience in the face of a multitude of threats, including accelerating sea level rise. With leadership from the Massachusetts Geological Survey, UMass's Gloucester Marine Station, and an advisory committee made up of incredibly knowledgeable and engaged scientists and salt marsh restoration professionals, we are working to protect and restore these vital ecosystems and coastal resources.

Goals:

  • Standardized field-based monitoring paired with satellite remote sensing strategies to enable early detection of emerging threats and streamlined restoration projects
  • Rigorous science to see what restoration practices are working best to inform and simplify restoration project permitting
  • Work collaboratively with the restoration community to manage salt marshes for resilience in the 21st century.
