Undergraduate Intern

Nate is an undergraduate research intern majoring in Natural Resources Conservation. He participated in projects involving conducting fieldwork and lab analyses to describe forest soils in the state for the Massachusetts Geological Survey, as well as assisted in identifying vegetation adjacent to soil core locations. He is interested in hands-on ecological restoration, especially involving invasive plant removal and revegetating ecosystems with native plants.

Geospatial Summer Intern

At MGS, where I served as the geospatial intern for Summer 2025, I have worked to increase our understanding of the environmental characteristics of various long-term forest plots on state forestland. I have also worked with Dr. Speiser to validate an automated workflow which identifies pools in Massachusetts salt marshes from satellite imagery. I completed my undergraduate education in environmental science at Middlebury College and am now completing an MS in Geographic Information Science and Technology at UMass Amherst.

Faculty/Staff

David Boutt leads a large research group that uncovers underlying physical and geochemical processes involving groundwaters role in myriad environmental systems. His work in New England has focused on hydrological change and how groundwater responds to the flood/drought cycle. Work further afield has positioned his team as world experts in lithium brine systems in the Western US, Chile, and Argentina.

Ella is a senior Environmental Science major with a Geology Minor. Ella is currently supporting Jin Ho Lee's lab work and exploring soil carbon of the Massachusetts State Forests. She is passionate about climate change, environmental education, and geology!

Tim's research focuses on the intersection of climate change and human land use. Tim uses remote sensing, instrumental observations and sedimentary archives to reconstruct past climate and environmental conditions and evaluate future hazards and vulnerabilities.
