It’s the first appearance in the famous spectacle for the acclaimed band known as “The Power and Class of New England.” The 400 band members have been preparing all semester for November 28, and their act will be as polished as their tubas when they hit the streets of New York. The parade will be televised on NBC.
For excited bandos, the most challenging part of this historic event may be trying to get some sleep the night before the parade—the band will assemble at 2:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. The parade steps off from Central Park West at 9 a.m., proceeds down Sixth Avenue to Macy’s at Herald Square and concludes at noon.
As they march, the band will play “Fight Mass,” “God Bless America,” and “Roll Down the Field.” When they arrive at the red star in front of Macy’s Herald Square at precisely 11:24 a.m., the band will have 75 seconds to pause in front of the NBC cameras and perform to the UMass Hoop Band classic “Big Noise From Winnetka.”
The official UMass fan parade-viewing spot is in front of the Pearson Building, 1330 Sixth Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets. The UMass Alumni Association is hosting a Pre-Macy’s Parade Wednesday Warm-Up on November 27 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. To register, use the link below.
