Celebrate with Us

Campus Sustainability Day October 23
UMass grows green at student farmers market.
UMass Amherst will join colleges and universities across the country on October 23 in celebrating Campus Sustainability Day. This year’s sesquicentennial celebration on the Amherst campus will be an expanded all-inclusive event, highlighting the university’s sustainable past, present, and future.

The day’s events will feature a Green Jobs Panel showcasing alumni in the green jobs industry; a Real Food Tasting and Student Sustainability Fair highlighting examples of living green on the UMass Amherst campus; a series of musical performances, including the UMass Amherst a cappella group, the Vocal Suspects; green-themed art installations; and the chancellor's public signing of the Real Food Campus Commitment.

The day will also mark the chancellor’s formal announcement of the university’s new campus-wide sustainability brand and website (an integrated comprehensive site that will replace a number of pre-existing green sites on campus, including the former Campus Sustainability Initiative site).

“As the flagship campus of the Commonwealth, we are defined by excellence,” said Chancellor Subbaswamy. “Sustainability is a core value of this institution and our exemplary leadership in this area provides a model for universities across the country.”

By signing the Real Food Campus Commitment UMass Amherst pledges to procure 20 percent of its food from real food sources by 2020, making the university the largest food-service provider in the nation to have signed on to the commitment to date.

UMass Amherst is a nationally recognized leader of the green campus movement and Campus Sustainability Day marks a time to recognize and celebrate the university’s continuing commitment to learning, living, and leading green on the UMass Amherst campus.
