Scholarship Opportunities for Incoming Food Science First-Year Students

We would like to announce some exciting scholarship opportunities to accepted incoming food science students to start the 2022–2023 academic year:

Goya Foods Culinary Arts Scholarship

Deadline: March 21, 2022

A scholarship for up to $20,000 per student is available. Applicants simply need to complete an essay in response to the prompt: “Please explain how Goya has enriched your family traditions." Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Feeding Tomorrow First-Year Student Scholarship

Deadline: May 31, 2022

A scholarship is available from the primary food science scientific society, IFT. The scholarship is for students about to enroll in UMass Food Science starting the 2022–2023 academic year. The scholarship opens February 1, 2022, and has a deadline of May 31, 2022. Please see https://www.ift.org/community/students/scholarships for more information.


Departmental Scholarships

The following are Food Science departmental scholarships, which are awarded each fall at a Scholarship Awards Luncheon/Dinner:

Alumni Scholarship
Any freshmen or transfer students who are University of Massachusetts Food Science majors with a strong interest in Food Science and in good academic standing are eligible for this scholarship.

Buttrick Scholarship
Only juniors and seniors in the University of Massachusetts Food Science major are eligible, and recipients are selected based on scholarship and financial need.

Feldberg Scholarship
This is the top undergraduate scholarship awarded to a senior Food Science major. Made possible by a generous donation by alumni Charles and Mickey Feldberg. Recipients are selected based on scholarship and departmental involvement.

Richard and Isabelle Nilsson Scholarship (to be awarded next in 2020 for school year 2020–2021)
Alternates annually between Animal Science and Food Science. Students majoring in Food Science are next eligible for the September 2020–2021 cycle. Recipients are selected based on scholarship and financial need.

Perrozzi Scholarship
Open to all University of Massachusetts Food Science majors who have completed two semesters at UMass with a 3.0 GPA or above. Recipients are selected based upon need, campus contributions, past experience, and a future career in the food industry.

Virginia Dare Award
This award is offered by Virginia Dare annually to one student at the University of Massachusetts who has shown outstanding aptitude in food science. 


College of Natural Sciences Scholarships

CNS Scholarships are available for Food Science majors. Information can be obtained at CNS Scholarships through AcademicWorks https://umass.academicworks.com/.


Professional Organization Scholarships for Food Science Majors

The Institute of Food Technologists offers undergraduate scholarships to incoming freshmen, sophomores, and juniors/seniors. Undergraduate scholarships are awarded ranging in value from $1,500 to $5,000. Deadline varies depending on scholarship (generally, February–April).

The Northeast Section of IFT (NEIFT) offers scholarships to undergraduate students who are active student members of the Northeast section. Student membership and participation in NEIFT is organized through the UMass Food Science Club. Deadline varies. Contact the Department of Food Science for more information.

National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDPRB), through Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), annually awards up to nineteen $1,500 scholarships to sophomore, junior, and/or senior undergraduate students enrolled in college/university programs that emphasize dairy. Eligible majors include Food Science majors. Scholarships are awarded based upon outstanding academic achievement; a commitment to a career in a dairy-related discipline; and demonstrated leadership, initiative, and integrity. Deadline: May.

The American Association of Candy Technologists (AACC) is offering a $5,000 scholarship award for the 2021–2022 academic year. Students showing a demonstrated interest in confectionery technology and majoring in food science can get the application at https://www.aactcandy.org/awards-scholarships/john-kitt-memorial-scholarship/.
