Typical Undergraduate Degrees
Graduate students who wish to major in Food Science typically have had an undergraduate degree in Food Science or a related field such as microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, or nutrition.
Applying Online
Application to the Graduate Program may be completed online at umass.edu/gradschool. Applicants may apply for fall or spring semester admission. Deadlines for application are February 1 and October 1, respectively.
Research Assistantships
A limited number of Research Assistantships (RA) are available to qualified applicants. RA positions are awarded by individual faculty for research in their laboratory. Graduate housing is available on campus or off campus within the greater Amherst area.
International Students
The minimum TOEFL score is 80. For the IELTS the minimum score is 6.5.
Applicants are encouraged to contact individual faculty in their field of interest to determine if they are taking new students, as an advisor must be identified before acceptance. If financial aid (assistantship/fellowship) is not requested, then a financial statement should be included with the application. This statement, the Graduate Sponsor Statement, must indicate that the minimum dollar amount is available to the applicant. MS applicants are expected to be self-supported.
