The We Are For Freedoms exhibition is in partnership with For Freedoms, an artist-led organization that models and increases creative civic engagement, discourse and direct action. For Freedoms works with artists and organizations to center the voices of artists in public discourse, expand what participation in a democracy looks like, and reshape conversations about politics.
For Freedoms was founded in 2016 by artists Eric Gottesman and Hank Willis Thomas and has since has grown into a large-scale collaboration between artists, institutions, organizations, and people across the nation who experiment with new and creative pathways to participation. It believes in—and advocates for—creativity as a civic right, participation as a civic duty, and deeper discourse as a catalyst of civic change. And it welcomes all.
For Freedoms started in as a platform for civic engagement, discourse, and direct action for artists in the United States. Inspired by American artist Norman Rockwell’s paintings of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms (1941)—freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear—For Freedoms’ exhibitions, installations, and public programs use art to deepen public discussions on civic issues and core values, and to advocate for equality, dialogue, and civic participation.
In the lead up to the 2020 presidential election, For Freedoms launched The 2020 Awakening and an online publication, The Infinite Playbook that introduces their four new guiding principles: Awakening, Listening, Healing, and Justice.

Fundada por Eric Gottesman y Hank Willis en 2016, For Freedoms trabaja con artistas y organizaciones para destacar sus voces en debates públicos, expandir la participación democrática y transformar las conversaciones políticas.
Su proyecto The 50 State Initiative (2018) está inspirado en la obra del pintor estadounidense Norman Rockwell que refleja las cuatro libertades de Franklin D. Roosevelt (1941): libertad de expresión, libertad de culto, libertad para vivir sin miseria y libertad para vivir sin temor.
Como parte de esta iniciativa, se han instalado vallas publicitarias y organizado exposiciones y programas públicos en todo el país para profundizar los debates públicos sobre cuestiones cívicas y valores fundamentales a través del arte y abogar por la igualdad, el diálogo y la participación ciudadana.

The Constellation Wall from The 50 State Initiative.
The 50 State Initiative was the largest creative collaboration in United States history. For Freedoms launched the non-partisan, nationwide campaign in June 2018, and invited artists, cultural and academic institutions, and social justice organizations to experiment with new forms of creative civic engagement in the months leading up to the midterm elections. Their work examined our collective freedoms and mapped out the artistic infrastructure of our country through hundreds of concurrent programs, including town halls, exhibitions, lawn signs, and billboards. The 50 State Initiative resulted in 744 activations as well as a network of 715 artists, 266 arts institutions, and civic leaders in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC.

The 50 State Initiative ha sido la colaboración creativa más grande en la historia de los Estados Unidos. For Freedoms inició esta campaña nacional apartidista en junio de 2018 donde invitó a artistas, instituciones culturales y académicas y organizaciones defensoras de la justicia social a experimentar con nuevas formas de compromiso cívico creativo en los meses previos a las elecciones al congreso.
Este trabajo examina las libertades colectivas en el país y hace visible una infraestructura artística compuesta por cientos de reuniones municipales, exposiciones, afiches y carteleras.
