Photography has remained an important part of the UMCA’s collection for study and research. Photographs in the collection not only explore the formal and conceptual aspects of photographic representation, but also question the very nature and scope of the medium. From the 1960s to today, artists have pushed the medium beyond straight documentary photography into new aesthetic and conceptual territories.

Documentary Photography from the 1950s to 1980 captures the photographers’ mix of optimism, pessimism, and irony, with an underlying spirit of empathy and humanism, illustrating the broad fabric of life both in New York City and across the country.
