Why a Letter of Specialization in Advanced Film Analysis and Theory?
The Letter of Specialization in Advanced Film Analysis and Theory recognizes Film Studies majors who have demonstrated exceptional theoretical and analytical sophistication in the study of cinema. In an era marked by the proliferation of superficial or uninformed film criticism, this distinction affirms a student’s ability to engage in rigorous, informed, and original critical analysis. The specialization also signifies advanced preparation in film criticism and interpretation—strengthening applications to graduate programs in film and adjacent disciplines. Requirements
Students earn a Letter of Specialization by completing 4 courses, selected in consultation with the Specialization's Advisors:
-All courses must be at the 300-level or above.
-A minimum of 4 courses with a minimum grade of 'C',

FILM-ST 330 Film Auteurs
FILM-ST 470 Film Theory
FILM-ST 375 Film Writing and Criticism New Media (Choosing to write a film review)
FILM-ST 440 Women's Global Cinema
FILM-ST 490M Cinema and Mind
FILM-ST 550 Arthouse Cinema
FILM-ST 383 Avant-Garde Film
A 300 or higher level course that directly engages with film criticism can count as a substitute. Students will need to get written approval for such substitutions by the specialization's advisor, Professor Barry Spence ([email protected])
An additional 3-credit internship through the Research Practicum FILM-ST 398R is highly encouraged
