UMass Film Studies hosts two cutting-edge labs that combine research and creative practice. The Environmental Humanities Lab: Eco-Criticism & Eco-Praxis unites ecological theory with hands-on media experimentation, from analog 16mm filmmaking to sustainable, plant-based film processing, fostering ethical, tactile, and innovative approaches to environmental storytelling. The Videographic Criticism Lab positions UMass as a global hub for the video essay, hosting workshops, talks, and conferences with leading international practitioners. Since 2021, UMass video essays by faculty and students have been consistently recognized in Sight and Sound’s annual Best Video Essays list, highlighting the program’s impact on this rapidly evolving field.
