Lindsay Van Dyke is a UMass Amherst alum (’12) returning to campus now as a director and Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker to share with us four short film projects she has recently made. These films, documentary, and fiction, follow respectively a Guatemalan family’s search for reunification after being separated under the Trump Administration’s immigration policy, a young woman seeking refuge in her family’s rural home in Mexico, a crew of young outcasts in violent pursuit of Nazis to brutalize, and a teenaged boy who finds himself the only able-bodied member of his multigenerational family, becoming their “teen caregiver.”

This selection of short films will be introduced by Senior Lecturer in Film and Video Production, Bernadine Mellis. Mellis achieved her B.A. from Smith College and her M.F.A from Temple University. She specializes in Video Production wih an emphasis on documentary and experimental narrative films. She has created several short film series and documentaries including the award-winning documentary The Forest for the Trees. Her work has been shown at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, the MadCat International Women’s Film Festival, Brooklyn’s Galapagos Gallery, the London International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and The Lab in San Francisco. Today, Bernandine is working on a story about children of the New Left as well as a documentary about alternative burial practices.
