Back to calendarFilm Revolt: They Called Themselves Newsreel
The 1960s film-making collective The Newsreel created a groundbreaking, progressive cinema, advocating for peace and social justice. This feature length documentary project is an in-depth portrait of the group's inspiring work which in three years produced over sixty films and a virtual catalog of 1960's counter-culture covering subjects ranging from the Black Panthers to early Women's Rights groups. Co-director James June Schneider will present and discuss the work-in-progress and the vital importance of revisiting Newsreel's legacy today.
James June Schneider’s films include Blue is Beautiful (1997); Jean Epstein, Young Oceans of Cinema (2011); and La banda que buscó el sonido debajo (2012). His most recent film, Punk the Capital. Building a Sound Movement (2019) will screen at Northampton’s Academy of Music at 7pm on 9/25/19.
