Assistant Professor Sara Whitcomb to Receive 2014 Alumni Award From the University of Oregon

Sara Whitcomb

Shortly after earning her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 2009, Family Research Scholar Sara Whitcomb (2011-2012) secured her current post as an assistant professor in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts. She quickly sought out the Center for Research on Families’ expertise to help her prepare a major grant proposal. Now Whitcomb’s alma mater is recognizing her outstanding application of research to support families and schools in nurturing their children’s social and emotional development.

Whitcomb will receive the 2014 University of Oregon College of Education’s Horizon Alumni Award, given to alumni in the first 10 years of their post-graduate careers.

“Your work has already had a positive impact on educators and K-12 students across the country,” said, Mia Tuan, Interim Dean, University of Oregon’s College of Education. “Your track record in the few short years since your graduation from UO demonstrates your leadership ability, community engagement, and scholarly contributions to the fields of education and school psychology.”

Whitcomb leads UMass Amherst’s School Outreach Team, a program of the Psychological Services Center that provides assessment and intervention to families of school-age children throughout the Pioneer Valley. She recently presented her research at a 2014 UMass Alumni Weekend talk titled, “Creating Resilient Students and Safer Schools: Social-Emotional Learning in MA.”
