This workshop series helps faculty Principal Investigators in managing the challenging tasks of grant administration while staying focused on the research. Developed by senior grant-funded faculty, this year's series will cover topics such as project management, personnel management, effective collaborations, memorandums of understanding, and more.

October 25, "Project Management" led by Michael Cottom and Jennifer Ross

Project management is an essential part of being a PI, yet few of us are trained in this crucial skill. This hands-on, interactive workshop will expose PIs to the basic principles of project management, and introduce faculty to modern project management toolkits.

November 15, "Personnel Management" led by Michelle Budig, Karen Helfer, Shana Passonno, and Mark Tuominen 
9:00-11:00 a.m. in Campus Center 904-08 
Managing personnel--including students, staff, and colleagues--can be a challenging part of the job for PIs. In this workshop, PIs will use case studies and self-discovery to hone effective personnel management skills.

February 14, "The Art of Collaboration" led by Jennifer Normanly and the UMass Advance Team
9:00-11:00 a.m. in Life Science Laboratories S330 
Scholarly work and research has become increasingly collaborative. Effective teamwork and collaboration is essential for projects to succeed. In this workshop, a panel of faculty will discuss various mechanisms for working in effective collaborative teams. This workshop is a collaboration between the Office of Faculty Development and the UMass ADVANCE grant.

April 10, "Technical Tools for Effective Collaborations" led by Martina Nieswandt and Ian Raphael 
9:00-11:00 a.m. in DuBois Library, Rm 2601
Research and scholarship collaborations can be enhanced through effective communication and setting expectations. This hands-on workshop will go through several administrative and technical tools that are useful for managing collaborations including memoranda of understanding, conflict resolution, and succession plans for research teams.
