The Building Academic Leaders in the Humanities: A Five College Leadership Program (BAL) provides intensive training and support for emergent and established leaders in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. The program prepares faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences at institutions in the Five College Consortium to take on leadership roles by developing their leadership skills.
BAL supports two annual institutes, one designed for early-to-mid-career faculty who are planning to take on their first leadership role, and another for current faculty leaders looking to move into higher leadership roles. Facilitated by experienced campus leaders and outside facilitators, the institutes cover subjects ranging from managing budgets to maintaining work-life balance. Developing participants’ capacity to support diversity, equity, and inclusion is an overall theme of both institutes.
OFD is the UMass Amherst, Five College institutional partner for the BAL leadership team, which develops and supports both institutes.
