LEAD+ Session: Supporting NTT Faculty Success: Evidence from COACHE and ADVANCE

Hosted by Academic Human Resources and the Office of Faculty Development in collaboration with the Provost's Office

LEAD+ (Leadership Enhancement for Academic Departments) is a professional development and support program for heads/chairs and associate deans covering topics of common concern to department/unit leaders. It is offered jointly by the Academic Personnel Office and the Office of Faculty Development.

Clinical faculty, extension faculty, lecturers, and research faculty make vital contributions to UMass Amherst’s core mission of education, research and creative activity, and service for the common good. This session offers campus leaders a look at the COACHE 2024 Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey results with a special focus on the experiences of non-tenure-track (NTT) faculty. Thematic areas considered include global satisfaction in the workplace, the department, mentorship, contract renewal and promotion, the nature of work (teaching, research, and service), and appreciation and recognition.

We will also explore recommendations aimed at creating a more inclusive environment for these faculty. Using the UMass ADVANCE R³ model, we emphasize the importance of resources, relationships, and recognition, as well as representation. All faculty require resources to do their work well, and grow in their jobs, as well as opportunities to build relationships with other faculty in the department and school/college. Faculty work should be recognized and respected both privately and publicly, and all faculty must be represented in governance activities. We provide examples of how true inclusion can work from departments on campus and from peer institutions breaking new ground to support equity for this important core of our faculty community.
