LEAD+: Negotiation Strategies for Leaders in Academic Affairs

LEAD+ (Leadership Enhancement for Academic Departments) is a professional development and support program for heads/chairs and associate deans covering topics of common concern to department/unit leaders. It is offered jointly by the Academic Personnel Office and the Office of Faculty Development.
If not managed effectively, everyday problems and disagreements can create resentment, foster a poor work climate, block crucial change initiatives and prevent the leader’s ability to meet important goals. This workshop will focus on learning key negotiation concepts and strategies that will help participants to successfully implement important initiatives, manage daily work conflicts, and counter resistance This workshop is designed to support new and emerging leaders in academic affairs to effectively meet the challenges they face in their daily work with faculty, staff, administrators, and students at a large, complex institution. This presentation will be interactive and will involve discussions, role-play simulations and Q&A.

Facilitator Bio:
Rochelle L. Woods has over a decade of experience helping professionals successfully navigate professional negotiations, including job offers, promotions, conflicts and important workplace issues that are necessary to succeed personally and professionally. Dr. Woods is an Executive Negotiation Strategist who has coached and trained over 3,000 higher education professionals across the country, working with them one-on-one and in small and large workshops and seminars. Dr. Woods has extensive training and professional experience in the areas of leadership, staff management, conflict resolution and negotiation. She has trained in negotiation at University of Pennsylvania, Yale and Harvard’s Executive Education programs, including receiving a certificate from Harvard’s Negotiation Master Class and the Executive Negotiation Workshop at University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Woods is a career higher education professional, currently serving as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has previously academic initiatives and administrative operations, as well as student success programs at University of Pittsburgh, Ohio State University and University of Michigan. Dr. Woods received her BA in Sociology from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, MA and PhD degrees in Sociology from University of Michigan, and an Executive Certificate in Public Policy from The Kennedy School at Harvard University.
