Hosted by the Academic Personnel Office and the Office of Faculty Development in collaboration with the Provost's Office

LEAD+ (Leadership Enhancement for Academic Departments) is a professional development and support program for heads/chairs and associate deans covering topics of common concern to department/unit leaders. It is offered jointly by the Academic Personnel Office and the Office of Faculty Development.

In this workshop, Dr. Annmarie Caño will provide a leadership framework that can be used to foster belonging so that everyone in your department, not just the privileged few, can thrive. Drawing from her book, Leading Toward Liberation: How to Build Cultures of Thriving in Higher Education (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2025), she will provide an overview of liberatory leadership, offer strategies for leading from an orientation of accompaniment, and facilitate the crowdsourcing among participants for additional ideas to promote belonging.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:
1. Gain an understanding of the history of liberation praxis and its applicability to university leadership.
2. Identify leadership tools and strategies that promote belonging.
3. Create an action plan to engage in leadership strategies that promote belonging.

Facilitator Bio: 
Annmarie Caño, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at Gonzaga University, a licensed clinical psychologist, and a certified executive coach who supports leaders wishing to cultivate healthier and more inclusive work environments. Annmarie’s work is informed by 25 years of experience in higher education, including as an award-winning teacher and mentor, a two-time Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and a principal investigator on National Institutes of Health grants focused on improving the health and well-being of individuals, couples, and families. She draws from her higher education experience as well as her lived experiences as a Latina and a first-generation college student to advance personal, systemic, and structural change that can liberate the workplace from harmful and exclusionary practices. Annmarie earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Princeton University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Stony Brook University. In her book Leading Toward Liberation: How to Build Cultures of Thriving in Higher Education, Annmarie applies liberation praxis as a framework for academic leaders who strive to create healthier working environments for everyone.
