Results made available through this website are being used to guide and inform initiatives for improvement. Reports have been presented and shared broadly to faculty, leadership, and administrators for discussion and feedback.
Reports are accompanied by COACHE Dashboards created by the Office of Assessment, Survey, and Effectiveness Research (ASER). These can be viewed on Flagship Analytics. These dashboards are available to faculty and staff who have attended a University Analytics and Institutional Research (UAIR) Flagship Analytics training session. Additional information on Flagship Analytics can be found on the UAIR website: https://www.umass.edu/uair/data/flagship-analytics.
COACHE 2024 Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey Reports
COACHE Thematic Reports - Notes on data and response rates by track, rank, and demographic
In all the thematic reports published on this website, the percent satisfied with a topic include those respondents who report that they are satisfied or very satisfied on a 5-point scale of very satisfied to very unsatisfied. The percent agreeing with a topic are those who report that they somewhat agree or strongly agree. The percent clear for a topic are those who report that they are somewhat or very clear.
Based on UMass Amherst's organizational characteristics, our COACHE comparison "cohort" includes 85 other institutions who identify as generally similar to our institution. UMass Amherst's COACHE survey results are closely compared against five institutions, referred to as our "peers" throughout the reports. Our peer institutions for the COACHE 2024 data are:
- Indiana University - Bloomington (2023)
- Iowa State University (2021)
- Rutgers University - New Brunswick (2023)
- SUNY - Stony Brook University (2022)
- SUNY - University at Buffalo (2022)
The COACHE Summary report includes results from 651 faculty, 45% of those eligible to complete the survey. The COACHE instrument assessed the experiences of all full-time faculty (see COACHE FAQs for more information). This does not include key members of our UMA community, including lecturers in administrative roles, part-time faculty, and librarians. ASER has conducted a Librarian Satisfaction Survey and results are forthcoming. Any faculty or librarian who would like to share their experience but could not through COACHE is encouraged to reach out to either OFD at @email or MSP at @email.
The Thematic Reports, Special Topic Reports, and Flagship Analytics Dashboards include an additional 23 faculty excluded by COACHE. For these reports, the final response rate is 47%. These response rates are detailed below.
Response rate by track and rank:
| Track / Rank | Response Rate |
|---|---|
| Tenured | 45% |
| Pre-tenure | 47% |
|
Non-tenure-track (NTT) (classified by COACHE as full-time lecturers who are not in administrative units, clinical faculty, extension faculty, and research faculty) |
48% |
| Associate Professor | 46% |
| Full Professor | 45% |
Response rate by other demographics:
Because UMA does not share demographic information with COACHE, response rates in the below demographic groups are estimates. (Estimates on demographics of survey respondents were calculated by dividing the number of individuals reporting in the survey that they are in a specific demographic group by the number of individuals at the time of the survey who have indicated that they are members of that demographic group at UMA and multiplying it by 100.) Also, please note that while the COACHE survey's gender classifications include trans men and trans women, they do not include non-binary individuals. The COACHE Dashboards developed by ASER include a different demographic breakdown which includes non-binary and multiracial individuals.
| Demographic | Response Rate |
|---|---|
| Men | 35% |
| Women | 54% |
| White | 46% |
|
Faculty of Color (classified by COACHE as individuals not categorized as White, non-Hispanic) |
40% |
| Asian/Asian American | 26% |
|
Underrepresented Minorities (URM) (classified by COACHE as individuals who neither identity as White, non-Hispanic, nor as Asian/Asian American) |
44% |
