Michelle J. Budig is the Executive Deputy Provost and Professor of Sociology. In this role, she works with the provost in achieving the strategic academic goals and objectives of Academic Affairs, including leading strategic initiatives, integrating academic initiatives with other executive offices, and engaging with partners across the campus, the UMass system, and externally, to advance academic strategic initiatives. Michelle joined the UMass Amherst faculty in 2001 in the Department of Sociology and is widely recognized for her scholarship on gender, work, families, and social policy. Since 2015, she has served in several administrative roles on campus, including as vice provost for faculty development and senior vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. In the former role, she created and directed the Office of Faculty Development. As senior vice provost for faculty and academic affairs, Michelle has been a member of the Provost’s Leadership Team and held broad responsibilities throughout Academic Affairs, including oversight of departmental AQAD reviews and accreditation, academic program development on the Mount Ida campus, new degree program development, and faculty development.
